John W. CurtissApril 18, 1921 ~ March 20, 2017 (age 95)
John W. Curtiss age 95 of Shelton passed away on March 20, 2017 at San Dimas Community Hospital in San Dimas, California. He was the devoted husband of the late Elizabeth “Betty” Curtiss for 66 years who died in 2008. John was born in Shelton on April 18, 1921 son of the late Clarence C. Curtiss, Sr. and Rose Boutieller Curtiss. He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He and his brother Cleve Curtiss were in business together beginning their car repair business in 1946 on Howe Ave., Shelton. They later built a building at 330 River Road, Shelton when their business began to grow. They later moved to Seymour Ave., Derby when they became Lincoln Mercury dealers and then built a building on Bridgeport Ave., where they remained in business until 1972 when they sold the business and it became Curtiss Ryan Lincoln Mercury. John was an avid antique car collector and restorer all his life. He and Betty took many wonderful worldwide trips through out their life together. Besides his wife he was also predeceased by his two sons Jack and Allan Curtiss, and his brother, Cleve Curtiss. He is survived by his loving companion and friend Virginia Johnson of California, his granddaughters, Suzanne Curtiss of Arizona and Linda Rabbit and her husband Timothy of Florida, his nieces, Dorothy Curtiss and Marie Zenisky, and five great grandchildren and three great-great children. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday March 29th at 1 PM in the James T. Toohey & Son Funeral Home, 92 Howe Ave., Shelton with Rev. Lucille Fritz officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Shelton. Calling hours will be held Tuesday March 28th from 5 to 8 PM. Memorial Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in John’s memory.
