Robert "Smoots" Smarz, Jr.

Robert “Smoots” D. Smarz, Jr., age 68 of Shelton, passed away January 7, 2024 at Griffin Hospital, Derby.  He was born in Derby, August 8, 1955, son of the late Robert Sr. and Margaret Fogarty Smarz.  He was a graduate of Shelton High School, Class of 1973 and worked at Sikorsky, Porky’s Café, and later as a self-employed painter.  He enjoyed going fishing, camping, hiking, and being with his dog, Dakota.  He also enjoyed hanging out with his friends and family, especially his nieces and nephews.  He is survived by his sisters Cathy Soda (Tom), Robin Smarz, and Susan Smarz (Jim Polis), his nieces and nephews Tom Soda, Jr. (Julia), Christine Ortiz (Eddie), Michele Soda, Thomas McCormick (Danielle Hubbard), Kelly McCormick, and Madden Polis, his aunt Judy Douglas, and several great nieces and great nephews and many cousins.  A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 10am in St. Joseph Church, Shelton.  Visitation will be held at St. Joseph Church Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 9am until the time of Mass.  Interment will be private.  The James T. Toohey & Son Funeral Home, 92 Howe Ave., Shelton has been entrusted with arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
